| The Commission for Presidential Debates whose primary purpose is to sponsor and produce debates for the United States presidential and vice presidential candidates announced today that Senators Barack Obama and John McCain had agreed to debate each other on the internet on Monday September 1st. In September 1960, 70 million U.S. viewers tuned in to watch Senator John Kennedy of Massachusetts and Vice President Richard Nixon in the first-ever televised presidential debate. There were four Presidential debates that year that were to become known as the 'Great Debates'. The Great Debates marked television's grand entrance into presidential politics. Half a century later Senator John McCain of Arizona and Senator Barack Obama of Illinois are about to rewrite history as they hold the very first internet Presidential Debate. I managed to catch Senator Obama as he left his Chicago office this morning and he told me he is very excited about meeting people on the net. "I am very comfortable using a computer and I see this as an ideal opportunity to reach out to millions of people", he said. Senator McCain, although not as tech savvy as his counterpart said he loved the intimacy of the Wantonegotone.com website and he would enjoy the Town Hall feel of the debate. He further stated that his wife would be doing the actual typing but that he would be answering all the questions. The owners of Wantonegotone.com said in a news release that they are very honored and excited that their site has been chosen for the first internet debate and assured us that the site will be ready to handle millions of users on September 1st.
